  • There are over 600 Play Streets in Philadelphia, which are part of the Free Summer Meal Program, overseen by Parks & Recreation and serve as a safe place for children to receive two free meals a day during the summer;

  • The Play Streets are closed off to cars between 10am-4pm;

  • A resident on the block applies to be a Play Street Supervisor and 70% of the block needs to sign on their approval for the Play Street;

      and

  • Not all of the Play Streets as ’playful’ as they could be.

  • In 2017 we trained 12 teens to facilitate and play games with the neighborhood youth on 5 blocks in West and North Philadelphia!

  • In 2018, we hired 30 teens across two neighborhoods!

  • In 2019, we hired 42 teens across three neighborhoods through a support from the William Penn Foundation and the Mayor's Office of Educaton.

  • During the summer, we place Play Captains on Play Streets in Kensington & West Kensington and Hunting Park in North Philly and in the West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood, including Mantua, Belmont and Mill Creek.

  • We expanded to an afterschool program in the fall of 2018, with generous support from the West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood (WPPN) and placed 6 Play Captains in early two childhood centers in the Promise Neighborhood.  In 2019, we'll place 10 Play Captains in 4 early childhood centers in the WPPN.
